Welcome to the Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies (SACS)

The Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies (SACS) is a new unit of the Faculty of Humanities that brings together the units of Social Anthropology, Religious Studies, Middle East Studies and Muslim Societies.
Researchers at SACS analyse institutions, practices and norms of societies worldwide with a systematic-empirical orientation.

Their research is organised in five research clusters. Within these clusters, academics from different disciplines and fields conduct joint and interdisciplinary research. They investigate current developments in a global and historical context and analyse the conditions of change and transformation from multiple perspectives. SACS makes an important contribution to the university's specialisations in intercultural knowledge, sustainability, politics, and administration. A transversal area shared by all three units strengthens methodological training and outreach.

At the moment, the new department is being set up and therefore in a phase of transition. Students enrolled in previous programmes can obtain their degrees as planned.
